Welcome to the Department of History
The Department of History was a part of the Economics Department from the time of its inception. It offered complementary course to the students of Economics. Though it was established as a separate department in 1997, it continued to offer complementary course. The BA Degree programme in History was started in 2014. The sanctioned strength of the programmeis 40. The first batch of students passed out in April 2017. At present, there are 108 students in the department.
The department aims quality improvement and academic excellence. The Department supports students to get wide knowledge about history particularly, World History, Indian History and Kerala History. The Department strives to provide novel ideas about various historians and their writings. Moreover, students are also motivated to become good historians.Leadership qualities of the students have been developed. Students become emotionally balanced. They develop love towards the nation. They develop the feelings of nationalism and patriotism. The department helps the students to acquaint with the salient features of pre-historic and proto-historic cultures in India.
The syllabus of the department provides high preference to Indian history and culture. Further, the department offers courses to understand the circumstances that led to the establishment of Colonialism and its impact in India. They analyze the progress of early resistance movements against the British.The students are familiarized with the various phases of freedom movement in India. They appreciate the contributions made by the nationalists to get India liberated from the British rule. It creates the feeling of nationalism and patriotism among the students. They appreciate the techniques of Mahatma Gandhi adopted in the freedom struggle.They develop thorough understanding of the circumstances in which India attained freedom.
